UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO

ASCE STUDENT CHAPTER

ABOUT

ABOUT

The UI ASCE Student chapter membership is composed of civil engineering students from the University of Idaho. Our chapter was chartered in 1926 and was one of the earliest ASCE student chapters established. Civil engineering has always been a mainstay at the UI, with two of the first four graduates receiving degrees in civil engineering. The UI ASCE Student Chapter is a member of the ASCE Pacific Northwest Region, which includes schools from Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Canada. Our members participate in many activities including the National Student Steel Bridge Competition, National Concrete Canoe Competition, surveying, technical paper competitions, and much more.

STEEL BRIDGE

Preconstruction Planning

Bridges are designed to meet criteria assigned to the team prior to conference.  Bridges are commonly designed to combat deflection, examine weight distribution, and provide for safe construction.

Design &
Testing

Using Civil 3D AutoCad and SAP 2000 the bridge model is tested and modified through several iterations until all criteria are met while maximizing all opportunities for points in the competition.

Construction
Management

Material is purchased using a set budget and constructed in the University of Idaho shop.  Through the use of student machining skill sets and design preparations the bridge is constructed.

CONCRETE CANOE

Material &
Mold Design

The canoe team and their advisory staff meet to discuss both material choices for competition and shape construction to maximize all opportunities for points in the competition at regionals.

Fabrication &
Pour

Once the material has been tested and approved, the canoe is formed during a single pour day. With the help of a mold, the concrete mixture is placed on the canoe to set for a month.

Competition

The canoe is then transported to the regional conference where it undergoes a series of tests including whether it will float after being sunk and a canoe race against other regional schools.
